psychology of popularity

After the huge success of Barbara Fredrickson‘s Positive Psychology Coursera course, Coursera is now opening the gates for psychology enthusiasts who would like to understand the ‘Psychology of Popularity’ and how it is shaping our everyday interactions.

mitch prinsteinIn this course, Dr. Mitch Prinstein, distinguished Professor of Psychology at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will explain why popularity is not just something we were struggling to attain during childhood, but rather a way for us to understand how we behave as adults. This course is aimed at educate you on how popularity as adolescents has influenced you as adults and how popularity is connected to better parenting styles, a better fulfilment in life, and can promote success in work. The developmental psychopathology framework Dr. Prinstein uses helps to better understand adolescents with their interpersonal experiences and its association to depression, self-injury, and health risk behaviours.

In this course you will learn how these past experiences affect you outside of your conscious awareness and how popularity even changes the expression on your DNA…

“I hope this course can help adults see their childhoods in a new light. I hope parents learn how to help their children grow up in a new world where popularity reigns more strongly than ever. And I hope that as adults, we can recognize patterns related to popularity dynamics at home, at work, and in our communities that can be changed so we don’t keep reliving our adolescence all over again.” – Dr. Mitch Prinstein.

Dr. Mitch Prinstein has received several awards for the contributions from his research. The awards included  the American Psychological Association Society of Clinical Psychology Theodore Blau Early Career Award, Columbia University/Brickell Award for research on suicidality, and APA Fellow of the Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology.
