The course at Kripalu Center will enable you to get a certificate in positive psychology online. It consists of 10 modules, two of which were “on-site” immersions held at Kripalu (Modules 2 and 10), with approximately 175 participants from around the world.
The bibliography and coursework was extensive, as we were slowly introduced to the fathers, mothers, grandfathers and grandmothers of positive psychology from its inception over the past few decades.
Each module was divided into three areas:
- Three-four videos (20-30 minutes in duration).
- Several readings from books and/or journal articles.
- A “reflection paper” based on the module material that could either be submitted, or not.
The three core staff members who built the program via the Whole Being Institute are Tal Ben-Shahar, Maria Sirois and Megan McDonough. Tal Ben-Shahar is famous for teaching the popular Harvard course ‘Positive Psychology 1504’.
The costs were $3,800 plus the cost of extra reading material and 10 nights of housing and meals. The total was close to $5,000. The total amount of contact hours was 138 and 147 were non-contact hours, the latter includes the submission of a final project.

For whom is this course?
For anyone who is is interested in positive psychology and its branches and wishes to attain a certificate in positive psychology.
The following is extracted, verbatim, from the Kripalu website and I do believe it is a very accurate response to this question:
“The CIPP offers a proven set of tools and principles useful in any profession or leadership role—managers, leaders, social workers, psychologists, coaches, allied health professionals, yoga teachers, school teachers, and anyone who influences how people think, act, and live, will benefit from this program. Prerequisites: Associates degree or comparable life experience.”
With regard to my personal journey during the last year, I am very thrilled to have met the individuals in my small break-out group and am blessed to say we are still connecting and assisting one other with emotional support via the various projects we chose to explore. Applying some of the basic tenets of the course is a daily event to help instill lifelong habits. So, these connections are paramount for networking and accountability purposes.
Another highlight of the course consists of the wide net which was cast with respect to careers and innovations related to coaching, health and well-being, mind-body work and leadership. One example of this is the area of study known as Appreciative Inquiry, a body of research where many participants have since delved.
Takeaways
In the end, I think the three most important lessons/concepts I took away from this course were:
- The Permission to be Human.
- Appreciate the good because the good appreciates.
- Self-concordant goals.
Inherent in each of these subject areas is the daily reminders that resilience is at the core of change and that our small, incremental, “kaisen” changes do work and in the long-run, lead to increased well-being. The concept of “longevity” and the work done by Dan Buettner and his work with The Blue Zones was very influential.
Connection with others and a healthier self-esteem can only create to a thriving lifestyle and in turn, a stronger community.
