Leaders strive to create a culture in the workplace that makes innovative moments thrive. Leaders who successfully encourage innovative work behavior in a company are consistently sought after, as they immediately give a company or organization the competitive edge. But, what does it take to design an innovative workplace?

UC Berkeley’s College of Engineering addressed this question by creating an executive education program that started in April 2016.

Innovation and Leadership through Positive Psychology is a 3-day leadership development program that primarily focuses on the impact of positive psychology on innovative work behavior. It is the only one of its kind, as it is designed to help leaders use their character strengths to create cultures that foster innovation.

The program is taught by UC Berkeley faculty, Silicon Valley professionals, as well as expert industry leaders. Who provide practical knowledge that is valuable to professionals looking to implement this within their organizations to encourage and increase innovation. The program focuses on the principles of applied positive psychology in the workplace, the innovation process, and understanding the role of the leader in promoting innovation. There is also be a networking reception planned for one evening during the program to help participants build a community of like-minded professionals.

The instructors use a combination of teaching methods, such as case studies, experiential learning, and lectures to teach tools that one can apply to the workplace.

Another unique element of this education program is the industry advisory board, led Facebook’s Director of Learning, Stuart Crabb. This group will include representatives from companies such as LinkedIn, Google, Yahoo!, Twitter, and Target, which creates a strong industry perspective to the content of the program.

“Various companies have worked with elements of positive psychology to enhance their work cultures but few, if any, have focused the framework on innovation. This program will give leaders the tools to create an environment that encourages employees to naturally contribute to innovation,” says Fung Institute Positive Psychology Fellow Keith Gatto, PhD, an instructor and the developer of the curriculum.
