MAPP at university of Pennsylvania starts Fall 2016

Expanding your effectiveness and insight with Positive Psychology is a life changing decision and who better to learn from than the Founder himself!

Martin Seligman, the father of Positive Psychology began the Positive Psychology Centre in hopes of promoting education and research in the field. It was here within the prestigious environment of the University of Pennsylvania that the first ever Masters in Applied Positive Psychology (MAPP) was offered in 2005.

The program offers a global edge to any professional with a world-class faculty of visiting pioneers within the field such as Barbera Fredrickson (Developer of the Broaden-and-Build Theory) , Jane Gillham (Co-developer of the Penn Resiliency Program), Jonathan Haidt (Author of Flourishing and the Happiness Hypothesis) and Barry Schwartz (Dorwin Cartwright Professor of Social Theory and Social Action, Swarthmore College) ,

The MAPP program is the pioneer in the application of positive psychology within a variety of professions. It aims to increase the use of positive interventions worldwide and attracts applicants from a variety of professions stimulating a dynamic and diverse learning experience. The MAPP is also a foundational post graduate qualification for those aspiring to pursue a Ph.D.

This stellar one-year program starts in the fall of each year and consists of 3 semesters. During the fall and spring semesters 9 modules are introduced, which relay the latest research, theory, and application of positive psychology interventions within a wide variety of environments such as non-profit settings, social organisations, coaching and clinical.

The syllabus includes the following:

  • Introduction to Positive Psychology
  • Research Methods and Evaluation
  • Foundations of Positive Interventions
  • Approaches to the Good Life
  • Applied Positive Interventions
  • Positive Psychology and Individuals
  • Positive Psychology and Organisations
  • Humanities and Human Flourishing

 
Each of these 9 modules is presented in one intensive on-site learning weekend a month. In between students apply the modules in practice and engage in a variety of online learning platforms with their peers. This structure supports those working full time where the lessons can be translated into real life between onsite classes.  

In the final semester, students take part in the Capstone Project where they can apply the new knowledge they have gained within the context of their particular profession, This is an excellent opportunity for students to consolidate their learning while actively contributing to the progress of the positive psychology movement.

Applications are accepted until 1 March for acceptance into the fall semester of the same year. Check here for more information on admission requirements.

Tuition is calculated per semester and financial aid options are available. In accordance with their philosophy of accessible education, the University of Pennsylvania also offer a scholarship per year to a qualifying participant.
